Short answer

A replica IWC dress watch is a copy of an IWC Portofino, Portugieser, or Da Vinci. IWC does not make it. Prices run from about $60 to $500. The case shape and dial layout copy the original. The movement, materials, and finishing do not. IWC will not service the watch. US law bans the sale and import of counterfeit goods.

IWC dress models that get copied

IWC builds several lines. The dress lines are the Portofino, the Portugieser, and the Da Vinci. Pilot's watches and the Ingenieur sit outside that group.

Portofino

The Portofino Automatic 40 uses a 40mm case and calibre 35111. That calibre is based on a Sellita SW300. Replica versions copy the 40mm case, the leaf hands, and the alligator-style strap. Thickness on copies runs 9mm to 11mm.

Portugieser

The Portugieser Automatic 40 measures 40.4mm across. The Portugieser Chronograph measures 41mm and uses calibre 69355. Copies of the Chronograph are the most common Portugieser replica. Subdial spacing is the main tell. The genuine 69355 has a column wheel. Most copies use a modular chronograph with a cam.

Da Vinci

Da Vinci Automatic 36 and 40 models use the same three-hand layout. Replica counts are lower than Portofino and Portugieser counts.

Price tiers

  • $60 to $120: quartz movement or a basic Chinese automatic. Mineral glass. Strap is synthetic leather.
  • $150 to $250: automatic movement, often a Seagull ST21 or a Miyota 9015. Sapphire crystal on some units. Case finishing is machine-polished.
  • $300 to $500: sellers call these super clones. Decorated movement with engraved bridges. Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Strap may be real leather.

Where replicas differ from the genuine watch

  • Movement. IWC in-house calibres 82xxx run at 28,800 vph with a 60-hour power reserve. Replica movements run 21,600 or 28,800 vph with 38 to 42 hours.
  • Case finishing. Genuine cases get hand-polished bevels. Replicas get uniform brushing and flat polish.
  • Dial. Applied indices on genuine models sit raised. Printed indices on copies sit flat. Font weight on the date wheel differs.
  • Water resistance. Sellers list 30m to 50m. Most units are not pressure tested.
  • Case backs. Engraving depth is shallow on copies.

Legal status in the United States

Counterfeit watch sales fall under 18 U.S.C. 2320, the Trademark Counterfeiting Act. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments at ports of entry. IWC is owned by Richemont, which files takedown requests and joins seizure programs.

Seller claims with no fixed meaning

  • "1:1 clone." No industry standard defines this term.
  • "Swiss movement." Many units carry an Asian movement with a Swiss-made rotor.
  • "Same factory." IWC does not supply cases, dials, or movements to third parties.
  • "Swiss grade." A marketing label, not a grading system.

Warranty and service

IWC warranty covers watches sold by authorized dealers. Replicas fall outside it. Independent watchmakers can service generic movements such as the ETA 2824 or Miyota 9015. Parts for decorated clone movements may not exist. Resale value is close to zero.
