Where counterfeits fail
Calendar and moon phase
On the real watch the moon phase disc advances one step per day and completes a cycle in about 29.5 days. The day and month discs sit in two apertures below the 12 o'clock position and change together near midnight. Counterfeit modules use a 24-hour day and night disc in place of a true moon phase. The date hand on a fake may be fixed to a printed ring, so it cannot point at the correct number. Day and month discs on fakes sit off-center in the apertures.
Movement and caseback
The genuine watch has a sapphire caseback. The movement under it should show the calibre 6654 finish: beveled bridges, circular graining, and a rotor with Blancpain engraving. Counterfeits use generic automatic movements from third-party suppliers. Decoration on a fake rotor is stamped, not finished by hand, and the calibre number stamped on the movement does not match the paperwork.
Case, dial and strap
The 40 mm case has a narrow bezel and lugs with two steps. Polished and brushed surfaces meet on a sharp line. Counterfeit cases show rounded transitions and thicker bezels. On the dial, the Roman numerals are applied in gold on the real piece. Fakes glue on thin metal numerals. The word "Blancpain" sits at a set height and spacing. Fake print sits low or runs into the numeral ring. The strap is alligator with square scales. Fakes use embossed calf leather, and clasp engraving is shallow.
Checks before you buy
- Compare the reference and serial numbers on the caseback with the warranty card and the service record.
- Ask for high-resolution photos of the movement through the caseback.
- Set the calendar forward. The day, date and month should change together at midnight. The moon phase should move one step per day.
- Check the price. A sealed 6654-3642-55B listed far below market is a counterfeit or a stolen watch.
- Have an independent watchmaker open the case. Blancpain service centers do not service counterfeit watches.
Legal and service notes
