Short answer

Where the number comes from

Listings attach numbers to replicas for search traffic. The digits often match a code stamped inside a fake caseback, or a seller's own stock number. Cartier case codes use four digits and sit next to the reference on the caseback. A seller who cannot show a caseback photo with a matching W reference and serial number has no proof of origin.
